To rate a song, right-click it in your playlist or Media Library, select Rate Selected Items and then a star rating out of 5. In WMP 9 you can rate songs and create auto playlists based on these ratings. Copying controls are accessed on the left-side Copy from CD tab and files are copied to WMP 9’s Media Library. The latter is great, as it plays back all your digital music files at the same volume, despite discrepancies in the original recording levels, and will keep a consistent volume level if you burn an audio CD as well.Ĭopying/ripping an audio CD in WMP 9 is the same process as in WMP 8, except that in WMP 9 you can create variable bit rate WMA files. Under View-Enhancements, you can bring up a graphic equaliser as well as WMP 9’s new track cross-fade and auto volume levelling options. When you play a CD in WMP 9, an album image and expanded information - beyond track information - can automatically be retrieved from the Internet and displayed (as seen in FIGURE 1). Pressing -1 reverts to Full mode.Īlso new in WMP 9 is the Info Center view. Double-click a skin’s file name to apply it or, alternatively, you can switch to Skin mode any time by pressing -2. You can download more skins from the Internet by clicking on More Skins. From the Skin Chooser tab you can browse through the skins, and by simply clicking once on the file name, a screenshot should display on the right-hand side. You can also elect to subscribe to Premium Services such as online music site Press Play. In the default Full mode you can access other areas of WMP 9 such as Media Guide, Media Library, Copy from CD, Radio Tuner, Copy to CD or Device, and Skin Chooser. WMP 9 has two types of view: Full mode and Skin mode. The top right icon in Mini-Player mode brings up a tiny video playback display and the bottom right icon returns to normal view. This will put a tick next to this option, and the next time you minimise WMP 9, Mini-Player mode will be in effect. To use this mode, right click on an empty area in the Taskbar, select Toolbars then Windows Media Player. When you first minimise WMP 9, you’ll be shown how to engage a Mini-Player mode that displays the player controls on the Taskbar. When playing audio, a visualisation effect will run from inside the Now Playing tab like videos, they can be viewed in full screen by pressing. You can change the visualisation type by going to Visualizations from the View menu. The Plug-ins tab allows you to select which visualisation plug-in you wish to use, as well as linking to Microsoft’s to find more plug-ins on that Web site. Other options in the Copy Music tab include selecting the directory where copied music files are stored, and the audio quality at which copied music is saved. You may choose to untick this if you wish to play any files you’ve created on another computer. Under Copy Music, ‘copy protect music’ is ticked by default. Other tabs in options include Player where you can (thankfully) stop Media Player starting up in the (Internet-content) Media Guide view. You can also define associated file types later by going to Tools-Options and selecting the File Types tab. After completing the privacy options, you can select the file types for which you want WMP 9 to be the default player. During installation of WMP 9 you can set privacy options such as electing whether or not to retrieve CD and DVD information automatically from the Internet, as well as deciding if you want to save a URL and file history in the player.
