![]() Personally, I have grown especially fond of 16-bit style graphics in recent years, in large part due to my love for Stardew Valley. Graphics, of course, are a very subjective category. ![]() I was not able to finish the game before posting the review, but in the approximately 9 hours in which I played the game I got a very good feel for all of the important elements you may need to know (According to, it should take most players between 7 and 15 hours to complete the main story of Unsighted, but if you know me you know I am usually the most leisurely of players and I take my time enjoying the story, characters, and environments so I tend to fall on the longer end of the play-time spectrum, meaning that I played maybe about half the game.) Screenshot of a dog being petted by Alma. References to other games and even to gaming culture abound, and my favorite reference is to which is apparent in achievements you receive when you, naturally, pet the dog. ![]() Veteran gamers will notice subtle references to the Legend of Zelda series: in the music, sound effects, collection of items, and especially in the fairy automaton companion who travels with Alma in her journey to save her friends. Unsighted is an original game with a science fiction setting where the majority of characters are automatons, including the game's protagonist, Alma. While I played the PC version, this game is also available on Switch, X-Box, and PS4. If you want a simple, relaxing set of puzzles to keep you busy, this will not disappoint. For my first official act of Sci-Fi Month 2021, I played the new indie game Unsighted by Studio Pixel Punk (check it out on Steam here). I certainly burned nearly 10 hours snapping little scenes of Mount Fuji and torii gates together and don’t regret a minute of it. I don’t think there’s a real high bar to clear for a jigsaw game, and wherever it is Pixel Puzzles manages to clear it. It’s no dealbreaker, but does hint at the budget nature of the title.īeyond that there’s a nice variety of scenes, and the pieces for each puzzle have different and unique connections that make them distinct. Something about the mouse selection is terribly random at times, which can be a bit frustrating if you’re trying to nab an elusive corner piece. What is a problem is how difficult it can be to grab the piece you want from the pond on the larger puzzles. Sadly you cannot snap individual pieces together before finding their place on the board, but with puzzles this small that’s generally not a problem. Pieces snap into place once you get them in roughly the right spot, so you can do a little guessing to fill in harder parts. You can even poke a few things in the background if you need a little break from puzzling. The presentation is lovely and soothing, with peaceful music playing over the animated monk and fishes. Each image is a filtered photograph of some quintessentially Japanese thing, with your loose pieces floating around in a koi pond and the frame for assembly a sort of zen garden. The smallest puzzles are 60 pieces, and the largest is only 350, so don’t expect any marathon jigsawing here. Once you complete a couple in your current level, the next level unlocks, with higher levels having more pieces. You get a total of 21 puzzles to assemble, most arranged in a series of levels to unlock. Pixel Puzzles: Japan has managed to sate my hunger for puzzles for a good many hours, and for that I am grateful. I had a 1500-piece puzzle of a meticulously-detailed cartoon space station when I was a kid that probably messed me up for life, dooming me to an eternity of sifting through little cardboard pieces. ![]() ![]() There have been a few times that I’ve been out shopping for something and felt myself strangely compelled to buy a jigsaw puzzle to do at home. ![]()

It recently approved a coordinated transmission plan for its next few offshore wind projects. And in the meantime, some states are moving forward independently. Who builds it? Who pays for it? Who owns it? The federal government is looking at some of these questions as part of a two-year study for the Atlantic Coast. WASSER: Still, there are a lot of big unknowns about an offshore grid. SHATTUCK: If any one of the lines goes down, you still have all the other ones. ![]() Plus, Shattuck says, connecting all of the wind farms offshore would be good for grid reliability. It likely would be better for the environment and fishing industry, too, since it would require fewer cables under the ocean floor. But whatever the design, experts say building it will be cheaper and probably faster than only trying to upgrade onshore infrastructure. He says there could be one central backbone running from Maine to Florida that all the projects plug into or something that's more decentralized. WASSER: Peter Shattuck is the president of Anbaric, a Boston-based company that specializes in building transmission infrastructure for renewable energy. PETER SHATTUCK: And so we've got a natural opportunity now to focus on building out the ocean grid. This so-called ocean grid isn't necessarily a new idea, but it's gained traction in the last few years as offshore wind finally looks like it's going to take off in the U.S. Instead of extension cords, think of linked power strips. WASSER: What Hines is talking about is a coordinated transmission system of arteries in the ocean that will bring power directly to Boston, New York City and other population centers along the East Coast. HINES: It would be ideal if we could create a system that the offshore wind farms could connect into, as opposed to every project trying to find its own landing point, its own connection into the land-based grid. ![]() Upgrading to arteries will cost billions of dollars. But the grid in those areas is full of capillaries. WASSER: Many of the first few offshore wind projects will plug in to Cape Cod and parts of Long Island. You know, you really have to find the right points into the grid. HINES: When you plug into the grid, you want to plug in to the arteries, right? If you get a blood transfusion, you don't take it through your finger where they try to pump blood through your capillaries. He says to think about transmission lines like a system of arteries, veins and capillaries. WASSER: Eric Hines leads the offshore wind energy graduate program at Tufts University. And second, the onshore grid just isn't set up to accept so much electricity.ĮRIC HINES: All of us have had moments where we plugged in too many things to one socket in the house and we blew a fuse, right? First, developers could run out of places like Brayton Point to plug into. This is fine for now, but soon, there will be two big problems. Wind developers will essentially run a high-voltage extension cord from their wind farms to open substations on land, usually whatever's closest. WASSER: To date, all offshore wind projects on the East Coast are designed to work like this. MOTT: And from there, it goes into the public's grid system. The energy will travel through cables buried about six feet beneath the ocean floor and land here at Brayton Point. WASSER: It will all start 30 miles out in the ocean where later this decade, powerful winds will spin turbines to generate electricity. LAWRENCE MOTT: With the coal plant being decommissioned, we're taking advantage of that same infrastructure to connect the offshore wind power. Now Lawrence Mott with offshore wind developer Mayflower Wind says this humming electrical equipment is about to get a second, greener life. MIRIAM WASSER, BYLINE: Brayton Point, in southeast Massachusetts, was once home to New England's largest coal plant. ![]() As WBUR's Miriam Wasser reports, one solution may be to lay an electrical grid in the ocean. Offshore wind farms are poised to deliver a lot of carbon-free electricity, but the electrical grid in many coastal areas can't handle that load. ![]() ![]() ![]() The multi-tab interface makes switching documents a breeze. This possibility ties into the previous one rather well, so it feels likely the natural topic to cover next. Given the lack of clear communication, this situation seems fairly likely to me, although even the changing gaming landscape doesn't write off a release down the line, of course.įinal Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 has become the priority ![]() All involved parties have been playing their Triple Triad cards so close to their chests with this one that they're practically in their lungs, so it's impossible to know for sure what the score is, though a timed exclusivity window long enough to outlast the buzz surrounding a game will effectively turn it into a de facto exclusive if either platform holder or publisher can't see much value in a late arrival. Or it could be the other way around - perhaps the exclusivity window has come and gone, but either Square Enix itself isn't too fussed about bringing the game to Xbox late, or MS has had its hands full with those massive deals and hasn't had time to properly court Square and get FFVIIR on Xbox. It could be, for instance, that Sony initially only intended to pay for a relatively short exclusivity window, but felt its hand was forced to extend the deal in light of Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda and later Activision Blizzard. Not only that, but there have been numerous developments closer to home for the industry's major players, with huge sums of money changing hands in a number of massive deals that would naturally have knock-on effects on any other arrangements that were already in place. We've seen countless delays and revised plans, so there's a pretty good chance that FFVIIR would already be on Xbox in an alternate timeline not wracked by a pandemic, component shortages, and conflict. It's been a tumultuous few years and with so many moving parts on the production line, gaming has been hit especially hard by the ongoing global situation. Let's break down some of the possible situations here, and see just how likely we think they might be.įinal Fantasy VII Remake was never planned for Xbox so what is going on here? Well, there are several possibilities, but before we dive into them, we thought it'd be interesting to take to Twitter with a poll, and the results so far have shown a surprisingly even spread across dreamers, believers, naysayers, and more. ![]() Since then, we've heard nothing at all about further ports, with multiple exclusivity windows both assumed and known having come and gone. Following Final Fantasy VII Remake's PS4 release on April 10th, 2020, the lack of any official confirmation of the exclusivity time frame - unlike other similar deals that have sprung up since, such as Deathloop (12 months) and Forspoken (24 months) - left fans hoping to see the remake on other systems nothing to do but speculate over when, or indeed if, when the exclusivity period might end.Ī little over a year later, we came as close as we have gotten to having a proper time frame laid out, with the enhanced PS5 version of FFVIIR, subtitled Intergrade and bringing both performance upgrades and new content for PS5, arriving on June 10th, 2021 alongside news that Intergrade wouldn't appear on any other systems for "at least six months." Sure enough, just over six months passed before the game launched on PC on December 16th - as an Epic Games Store exclusive, just in case this whole situation wasn't already enough of a mess - but between the Epic exclusivity and the port being, by all accounts, rather poorly optimised, Remake seemed to launch on PC with a Fire rather than a Firaga. What is somewhat surprising, though, is that communication from Square Enix has been so lacking regarding FFVIIR's 'timed exclusive' nature, despite several prime opportunities to set the record straight. Given that the original announcement of Final Fantasy VII Remake came on Sony's stage way back at E3 2015, the fact that the game has ties to PlayStation platforms (just like the original) should come as little surprise. ![]() ![]() To check if your Insignia remote is a universal remote, check if has the ‘Set’ and ‘Mode’ options.
